Book Blogger Hop: 4/15-4/18

Here’s my fourth time to join the Book Blogger Hop (via Crazy For Books blog) Thought this would be a good opportunity for me to connect with other book lovers out there in cyberspace 🙂 The Hop lasts Friday-Monday so there’ll be plenty of time to check the other participating blogs out!

So here’s the question of the week:

“Pick a character from a book you are currently reading or have just finished and tell us about him/her.”

My answer:

I’m currently reading Julia Karr’s XVI – a young adult novel that’s set in a dystopian future 2150 Chicago where a totalitarian government controls everyone (including the ad & sex-obsessed media), and where the people are economically/socially segregated into ‘Tiers‘ (like a caste system).

The ‘XVI‘ in the title refers to the government issue wrist tattoo that all girls get when they turn sixteen – a rite of passage signalling a girl’s freedom to start having sex that all teen girls look forward to. That is – except our main character Nina Oberon. Unlike her best friend Sandy (who’s a walking advertisement for the media-perpetrated sultry Sex-teen image), Nina isn’t ready to have sex with anyone or even have a boyfriend. With a home life terrorized by an abusive stepfather, that’s not really a surprise. Nina is deathly afraid that the XVI tattoo will only make her easy prey to predatory men. But that soon becomes the least of Nina’s problems when her mother is suddenly murdered before her birthday, and Nina becomes privy to a dangerous secret.

Nina is forced to grow up quickly as she struggles to learn the truth about her mother’s (and biological father’s) past, all while trying to save her younger half-sister from the clutches of her stepfather, and while dealing with the confusion of falling in love for the first time. I’m not yet finished with the book, but I’m really looking forward to what happens when Nina actually turns sixteen (with all that drama and danger in the weeks prior to that event, I can’t imagine what’s coming when Nina finally gets the tattoo!)
