Book Blogger Hop: 4/15-4/18

Book Blogger Hop

Here’s my fourth time to join the Book Blogger Hop (via Crazy For Books blog) Thought this would be a good opportunity for me to connect with other book lovers out there in cyberspace 🙂 The Hop lasts Friday-Monday so there’ll be plenty of time to check the other participating blogs out!

So here’s the question of the week:

“Pick a character from a book you are currently reading or have just finished and tell us about him/her.”

My answer:

I’m currently reading Julia Karr’s XVI – a young adult novel that’s set in a dystopian future 2150 Chicago where a totalitarian government controls everyone (including the ad & sex-obsessed media), and where the people are economically/socially segregated into ‘Tiers‘ (like a caste system).

The ‘XVI‘ in the title refers to the government issue wrist tattoo that all girls get when they turn sixteen – a rite of passage signalling a girl’s freedom to start having sex that all teen girls look forward to. That is – except our main character Nina Oberon. Unlike her best friend Sandy (who’s a walking advertisement for the media-perpetrated sultry Sex-teen image), Nina isn’t ready to have sex with anyone or even have a boyfriend. With a home life terrorized by an abusive stepfather, that’s not really a surprise. Nina is deathly afraid that the XVI tattoo will only make her easy prey to predatory men. But that soon becomes the least of Nina’s problems when her mother is suddenly murdered before her birthday, and Nina becomes privy to a dangerous secret.

Nina is forced to grow up quickly as she struggles to learn the truth about her mother’s (and biological father’s) past, all while trying to save her younger half-sister from the clutches of her stepfather, and while dealing with the confusion of falling in love for the first time. I’m not yet finished with the book, but I’m really looking forward to what happens when Nina actually turns sixteen (with all that drama and danger in the weeks prior to that event, I can’t imagine what’s coming when Nina finally gets the tattoo!)

Looking forward to blog-hopping this weekend! 🙂

XVI sound really interesting. Do you think it has appeal for older readers? I find YA books a bit hit and miss – I’m now outside of their target audience though I read a few.

I think the premise for XVI is very interesting, but I don’t think this one will appeal to older readers at all.

I think it’s a pity that the author kind of squandered an opportunity to really delve into gender stereotypes and such – the story eventually really concentrates more on the girl trying to learn more about her parents’ past (and possible involvement with the resistant movement) while dealing with being in danger from her stepfather plus of course, her fledgling romance. It started out really well though, with the main character not wanting to be the typical teen sexpot that’s encouraged in her society. It’s readable, but the book definitely became more shallow as the story progressed.

That sounds like a really interesting read. Must add to my to-read list.

Interesting premise for a book. Maybe it’s just me but that’s a heavy subject for a YA isn’t it. All the sexual issues. Then again our own society is geared with that sex sells mentality. 😛

    Thanks for sharing 🙂

Well, a lot of the dystopian YA novels have pretty heavy subjects… 🙂 Thanks for visiting!

Thanks for stopping by my blog :]
XVI’s on my ptr, it seems interesting! Sounds like Nina has got a strong head on her shoulders, I like the characters that go against the norm, though I suppose if that wasn’t the case there wouldn’t be much action 😛

Yeah, you’re right – books need a conflict to keep things interesting 🙂

I won’t say too much about this book then since you haven’t finished it, but I was a little let down. I really just think that was because all of the hype that went with the book and my hopes were way too high. I also thought that for how series the subject matter of the book was, Nina’s relationships weren’t quite as serious. I don’t know though, I still enjoyed the book and I look forward to the sequel. Happy hopping!
